Research in Lao Cai: Black Pig Value Chain

The research on “Upgading the black pig value chain in the two districts namely Bat Xat and Muong Khuong, Lao Cai province” funded by Oxfam GB, was conducted by a group of consultants from the Centre for Sustainable Development Policy Studies (CSDP), in the second week of October 2011. The purpose of the project is to i) Define the role of key actors as well as main phases in local black pig value chain through which recommendation of upgrading the chain is made; ii) Define the role, constraints, challenges and opportunities of women when they participate in every step of the value chain and benefited from (pig production, input services supply, raising, collecting, slaughtering, retailing etc.), from which recommendation on strategy and solution to upgrade the value chain are suggested (main activities, deploy methods, potential partners etc). This will help minority women participate more actively in the chain so as to take a lead in economy (enhance their right to decision making). iii) Make a forecast on the market demand (local and national level), especially demand for organic products, and the production capacity of project beneficiaries or those who live in project areas. To develop scenario for different production and consume markets (shortage of supply/demand, high/low input costs etc).
